This week saw the launch of UCU's new Researchers' Survival Guide. There are around 40,000 researchers in UK higher education and the vast majority are on fixed-term contracts. In many places this brings not only anxiety but unequal treatment in a host of forms. UCU is fighting to end not only the abuse of fixed-term contracts but the inequality and exploitation that come with them.
The Researchers Survival Guide is designed to help researchers to negotiate these problems, providing practical advice drawn from the experience of our members who are themselves researchers as well as tips on how to win change in the workplace. We want it to be useful for members but it is also designed to encourage non-members to join. If you want to order free copies for yourself or to distribute to your researcher colleagues, you can do so by emailing
