UCU activists in Brighton have attacked plans to turn Falmer High school into an Academy School.
Under the proposals, the universities of Brighton and Sussex would become partners in the sponsorship of the Academy. Academy Schools are owned by their sponsors, effectively removing them from the state system. Control of admissions policies, curriculum and staff terms and conditions passes to the sponsors. At its recent Congress, UCU declared its absolute opposition to Academy schools and affiliated to the Anti-Academies Alliance. You can read the Brighton Argus article here.
