Unique SolutionThe 'Unique Solution' proposal put forward by Sussex UCU is a voluntary scheme which we believe will enable the University to avoid redundancies, and retain the essential skills and knowledge of Sussex staff.Our proposal provides a framework through which voluntary options are provided which may enable staff to choose to move to fractional working, with clear protocols for the recovery of hours when conditions improve. We also advocate the scheme being open across the University, so for example small savings achieved in ‘not at risk’ areas can be used to help reduce cuts in support services that will otherwise increase burdens on those schools. We are not proposing mass cross-subsidies. Nor are we proposing pay cuts.We believe that every opportunity should be given to enable a voluntary solution to the current financial crisis to be developed before any consideration of compulsory redundancies. We believe this is far preferable to wholesale cuts amounting to nearly 10% of academic staff, and large cuts elsewhere.Further Information
