UNISEX

The following information has been provided by UNISEX to correct some of the mis-information concerning the University proposals to close this vital support service

The following is intended to correct inaccurate and misleading information pertaining to the rationale for ceasing UNISEX operations which was included in the document given to all staff at the Initial Communication meetings held on 24th November 2009.

1. the document states that "the project has a total annual budget of 115k" which implies that ceasing UNISEX operations will save this amount. Due to the tripartite nature of the funding arrangement the proportion contributed by the University of Sussex is as follows:

  • Forecast for 2009/2010 44k
  • Actual for 2008/2009 37k
  • Actual for 2007/2008 35k

2. the document states that "UNISEX... works in the area of sexual health and alcohol /drug advice for students and other young people in the Brighton & Hove area" and that "the UNISEX project concept involves broad outreach to the student/youth community of the city, whereas at this point in time the Universities need to focus more clearly on the needs of their own students, working with their students unions".

Both statements are inaccurate because:

  • UNISEX has only ever worked with University students
  • UNISEX has always worked in partnership with the students' unions

These inaccuracies demonstrate that the University has not "looked closely at whether UNISEX continues to represent best strategic fit and value-for-money" as the document also states.

UCU supports the campaign to keep this low-cost essential campus-based service running. With an increasingly diverse population, and larger numbers of students resident on campus, the need for impartial and relevant advice and support has never been greater.
